Chapter Twenty-One

We drove onto campus in a dour mood. We were hungry, tired, and in desperate need of a good shower. The dip in the creek seemed a very long-time ago, and we had spent most of the time since in a state of heightened adrenaline, and I was willing to bet that none of us smelled great.

We arrived a few minutes before the end of the day, and took up position in the main parking lot, so we could see everyone leaving. A few students eyed us curiously, but mostly we blended into the crowd milling around, making plans for the weekend.

“Ah to be young again,” Logan murmured under her breath. “And the biggest issue in your life is where to go on a Friday night.”

“I remember those days,” I agreed. “But in my case, you usually made the decision for me.”

“I’m older, I knew better.”

I grinned, and then a petite brunette descending the stairs behind Logan caught my eye. She had a bag clung over her shoulder and a black helmet over her arm.

“That’s her,” I said, with absolute certainty.

I didn’t know whether it was part of the fae magic, or just a coincidence, but Lily Fortman looked so much like Tallulah that they could’ve passed for sisters. She stopped at the bottom of the stairs to chat to a group of students and then waved as she walked away.

“I’ve got to admit, that’s kind of cool,” Tanner admitted, as Lily loped over to a black and orange motorcycle. She set her bag on the gas tank and pulled a phone from her pocket.

“It’s Sawyer’s bike,” I told him. “She borrows it without permission, even though he’s forbidden her from riding it about a hundred times.”

Tanner shrugged. “It’s still cool.”

“You wait here,” I told Tanner, and gestured Logan to follow me as I made my way to where Lily stood, texting.

“Lily?” I asked, as we drew near enough for her to notice us. She glanced up, completely unconcerned, and I noticed, with a pang, that her eyes were the exact shade of blue-green as her Sawyer’s. When I didn’t speak, those eyes turned defiant.

“Can I help you?”

“Actually, yes.” Now that I finally had her undivided attention, I didn’t know what to say.

“Stalking is a crime in all fifty states, you know,” Lily drawled, going back to her phone, and she sounded so much like Sawyer that I laughed.

“I’m a friend of your brother’s.”

Lily’s eyes cut to mine and turned cold.

“Where is he?” She shoved the phone in her pocket and took an aggressive step toward me. This girl was a live wire – every bit as fiery as her brother had described.

A few feet away, a boy with frosted tips and a Superdry T-shirt stopped to watch us.

“You okay, Lily?” he asked.

“Why don’t you go and shit in a bush, Perry.” A new voice drawled. My jaw dropped as the vampire from the creek dropped his shoulder into the frosted boy’s chest, knocking him aside. The other boy righted himself, but didn’t retaliate.
