Chapter Twenty-One
We drove onto campus in a dour mood. We were hungry, tired, and in desperate need of a good shower. The dip in the creek seemed a very long-time ago, and we had spent most of the time since in a state of heightened adrenaline, and I was willing to bet that none of us smelled great.
We arrived a few minutes before the end of the day, and took up position in the main parking lot, so we could see everyone leaving. A few students eyed us curiously, but mostly we blended into the crowd milling around, making plans for the weekend.
âAh to be young again,â Logan murmured under her breath. âAnd the biggest issue in your life is where to go on a Friday night.â
âI remember those days,â I agreed. âBut in my case, you usually made the decision for me.â
âIâm older, I knew better.â
I grinned, and then a petite brunette descending the stairs behind Logan caught my eye. She had a bag clung over her shoulder and a black helmet over her arm.
âThatâs her,â I said, with absolute certainty.
I didnât know whether it was part of the fae magic, or just a coincidence, but Lily Fortman looked so much like Tallulah that they couldâve passed for sisters. She stopped at the bottom of the stairs to chat to a group of students and then waved as she walked away.
âIâve got to admit, thatâs kind of cool,â Tanner admitted, as Lily loped over to a black and orange motorcycle. She set her bag on the gas tank and pulled a phone from her pocket.
âItâs Sawyerâs bike,â I told him. âShe borrows it without permission, even though heâs forbidden her from riding it about a hundred times.â
Tanner shrugged. âItâs still cool.â
âYou wait here,â I told Tanner, and gestured Logan to follow me as I made my way to where Lily stood, texting.
âLily?â I asked, as we drew near enough for her to notice us. She glanced up, completely unconcerned, and I noticed, with a pang, that her eyes were the exact shade of blue-green as her Sawyerâs. When I didnât speak, those eyes turned defiant.
âCan I help you?â
âActually, yes.â Now that I finally had her undivided attention, I didnât know what to say.
âStalking is a crime in all fifty states, you know,â Lily drawled, going back to her phone, and she sounded so much like Sawyer that I laughed.
âIâm a friend of your brotherâs.â
Lilyâs eyes cut to mine and turned cold.
âWhere is he?â She shoved the phone in her pocket and took an aggressive step toward me. This girl was a live wire â every bit as fiery as her brother had described.
A few feet away, a boy with frosted tips and a Superdry T-shirt stopped to watch us.
âYou okay, Lily?â he asked.
âWhy donât you go and shit in a bush, Perry.â A new voice drawled. My jaw dropped as the vampire from the creek dropped his shoulder into the frosted boyâs chest, knocking him aside. The other boy righted himself, but didnât retaliate.
